Skin Cancer Management

Greensthetics offers prompt and efficient diagnosis and treatment for concerns related to skin cancer.

Over 95% of skin cancers are caused by UV radiation. In Australia, UV levels can harm unprotected skin year-round, not just in warmer months. UV radiation, which is invisible and unrelated to temperature, can cause sunburn, premature aging, and cellular damage, increasing skin cancer risk. This cumulative damage is irreversible and may not be visible until much later.

What it targets?

Skin cancer results from abnormal skin cell growth due to prolonged UV radiation exposure from the sun or tanning beds. It includes various types, each with unique subtypes and treatment methods:

Basal Cell Carcinoma (BCC)
Subtypes of BCC include nodular, superficial, morpheaform, and pigmented. BCCs are graded by depth and invasiveness, with treatment options ranging from surgical excision and Mohs surgery to topical therapies for superficial lesions.

Squamous Cell Carcinoma (SCC)
Subtypes of SCC include keratoacanthoma, Bowen’s disease, and invasive SCC. SCCs are graded by differentiation (well, moderately, poorly). Treatment options include surgical excision, Mohs surgery, radiation, or topical therapies for in situ cases.

Melanoma
Subtypes of melanoma include superficial spreading, nodular, lentigo maligna, and acral lentiginous melanoma. Melanomas are graded by Breslow thickness and Clark level. Treatment options include wide local excision, sentinel lymph node biopsy, immunotherapy, and targeted therapy for advanced stages.

Treatment Process

STEP 1: BIOPSIES

Types of biopsies and surgical treatments include:

  • Shave Biopsy: Uses a small blade to remove surface layers of skin, ideal for shallow lesions.
  • Punch Biopsy: A circular tool extracts a core of skin, including deeper layers, perfect for deeper lesions.
  • Excisional Biopsy: Removes the entire lesion with a margin of healthy skin, providing a comprehensive sample, typically used for larger or deeper lesions.

STEP 2: TREATMENT OPTIONS

Surgical treatments include:

  • Excision: Surgically removes cancerous tissue along with a margin of healthy skin, the standard treatment for most skin cancers.
  • Mohs Surgery: A precise technique that removes and examines layers of cancerous skin until only cancer-free tissue remains, highly effective for BCCs and SCCs.
  • Curettage and Electrodessication: Scrapes away cancerous tissue, then uses an electric needle to destroy remaining cells, ideal for superficial BCCs and SCCs (Bowen’s).

Non-surgical treatments include:

  • Cryotherapy: Freezes cancerous tissue with liquid nitrogen, causing it to slough off; used for small, superficial cancers.
  • Topical Treatments: Creams or gels with cancer-fighting medications applied to the skin; suitable for certain BCCs and SCCs.
  • Photodynamic Therapy (PDT): Uses a photosensitizing agent and light exposure to destroy cancer cells; effective for superficial cancers.
  • Radiation Therapy: High-energy rays target and eliminate cancer cells, ideal for hard-to-treat areas.
  • Systemic Treatments: Chemotherapy, immunotherapy, or targeted therapy for advanced skin cancers that have spread.
